Drivetrain Repair & Service in Auburn, CA

Fix clunking, vibration, and drivetrain noise before it gets worse.

We diagnose and repair drivetrain problems for all makes and models at our Auburn shop. The drivetrain transfers power from the transmission to the wheels using axles, CV joints, driveshafts, and differentials. Problems show up as clunking when accelerating, vibration at highway speeds, or grinding noises when turning. We inspect boots, joints, bearings, and fluid condition to find the failure before it causes more damage.

About Our Drivetrain Service

Front-wheel-drive vehicles use CV axles with flexible joints that allow the wheels to steer while delivering power. Rear-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive vehicles use driveshafts with U-joints and differentials. All-wheel-drive vehicles like many Subaru models have multiple differentials and transfer cases that each need periodic service. Drivetrain problems get worse quickly if ignored. A clicking CV joint will eventually break, leaving you stranded. A worn U-joint can damage the driveshaft or transmission output shaft. We inspect boots, grease condition, and bearing play to catch problems before they fail.

What's Included

  • Visual inspection of CV boots, axles, and joints for tears or grease leaks
  • Driveshaft U-joint and center bearing inspection for play and wear
  • Differential fluid level and condition check
  • Wheel bearing play test and noise diagnosis
  • Transfer case fluid inspection for all-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive vehicles
  • Test drive to replicate noise, vibration, or clunking
  • Axle or driveshaft removal and installation with new hardware
  • Post-repair test drive to verify smooth operation

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does drivetrain repair take?

CV axle replacement typically takes 2 to 4 hours per side. Differential service takes 1 to 2 hours. Driveshaft replacement or carrier bearing replacement can take 3 to 5 hours depending on the vehicle and whether we need to drop the exhaust or subframe to access components.

How much does drivetrain repair cost?

CV axle replacement ranges from $300 to $600 per side. Differential fluid service ranges from $150 to $250. Driveshaft replacement ranges from $400 to $900. Differential rebuild or replacement can range from $1,000 to $2,500 depending on the vehicle. Call us at (530) 392-4323 for an exact quote after we diagnose your drivetrain.

What causes CV joint failure?

CV joints fail when the rubber boot tears and allows grease to leak out. Dirt and water get in, and the joint wears rapidly. Once a CV joint starts clicking or clunking, it needs replacement. Torn boots can sometimes be repaired if caught early, but most boots fail without warning and the joint is already damaged by the time you hear noise.

How often should I service my differential?

Most manufacturers recommend differential fluid changes every 30,000 to 60,000 miles, or more frequently if you tow heavy loads or drive off-road. Subaru and some other all-wheel-drive systems have multiple differentials that each need service. We check fluid condition during inspections and recommend service based on mileage and usage.

What is a driveshaft carrier bearing?

Trucks and rear-wheel-drive vehicles with long driveshafts use a carrier bearing to support the middle of the shaft. When the bearing wears out, it causes vibration or a rumbling sound at highway speeds. Replacing the carrier bearing requires removing and reinstalling the driveshaft.
