What actually strains a car's cooling system in the heat

A few components tend to break down together once temperatures stay elevated for weeks. Here's what we watch for during a summer inspection.

• Coolant level and condition. Old coolant loses its ability to transfer heat, so a small leak that was invisible in April becomes obvious in August.
• The water pump and hoses. Rubber and gaskets age faster under sustained heat, and a marginal pump that performed fine in spring can begin slipping now.
• AC refrigerant charge. A slow leak means the system runs low and works harder to cool the same air, which strains the compressor.
• The battery. Heat is harder on batteries than cold is, and a battery that's been marginal since spring often fails in August traffic rather than January frost.
